Contiki Tours for a European Trip?

I have looked online and have had a mix of good and bad reviews as well as great and horrible reviews. Can anyone tell me what they think. My main concern was hearing that the hotels were dirty and very far from main attractions.  I would be staying in what they call their superior tourist hotels but they don’t say what the exact hotel is.  Has anyone traveled with any other company and if so which is better?

The positives are that their tours are fairly inexpensive, and do hit the major highlights of Europe.

I agree that the hotels tend to be very basic (not dirty but very small, plain rooms) and poorly located, and another negative is that they tend to only spend 1-2 days in each place so you will have time for the most famous sights and that’s about it.

Unless you are very set on taking a tour you should consider traveling independently. It’s very easy to get around Western Europe on your own, even if you don’t speak any European languages, and it would probably be cheaper than Contiki or another tour company.
