I agree that the hotels tend to be very basic (not dirty but very small, plain rooms) and poorly located, and another negative is that they tend to only spend 1-2 days in each place so you will have time for the most famous sights and that's about it. Unless you are very set on taking a tour you should consider traveling independently. It's very easy to get around Western Europe on your own, even if you don't speak any European languages, and it would probably be cheaper than Contiki or another tour company.
